Jochen Gerner keeps a notebook on his studio desk at all times. He only draws in it during telephone conversations, with the tool he had in his hand before the phone rang, or with the nearest tool when he himself decided to make a call. Drawings made according to this protocol are peculiar because he only discovers their shape at the end of the conversation: they are both completely personal and completely uncontrolled. The hand draws but the mind is elsewhere. It is therefore a form of intaglio diary, in which nothing would be told and dated precisely, but where he compiles lists of things seen, which draws his interest in the external and contemporary world, in addition to the telephone drawings showing an inner world restored in jerks and turns. After En Ligne(s) (L'Ampoule 2003) and Branchages (L'Association 2009), Jochen Gerner offers us with the Atelier Series a new notebook of telephone drawings made between 2009 and 2019, representing ten years of conversations and annotations.
