Galerie Zwart Huis was founded in 2001 in Knokke. The gallery initially operated from Villa De Beir, a modernist doctor’s residence from 1924 designed by architect Huib Hoste. From the start, Zwart Huis focused on contemporary Belgian art, emphasizing figurative painting and drawing, while also exhibiting conceptual artists, sculptors, photographers, and designers.
In its early years, the gallery presented solo exhibitions by artists such as Carl De Keyzer, Luc Deleu, Ronny Delrue, Johan Tahon, Jan Vanriet and Liliane Vertessen. Through a consistent commitment to high-quality presentations, Zwart Huis quickly earned a strong reputation in the Belgian art scene.
In 2007, the gallery moved to a striking new space on the Knokke seafront, continuing its dynamic program with artists including Jan De Vliegher, Johan Tahon, Liliane Vertessen, Philip Aguirre, Hans Vandekerckhove and Philippe Vandenberg.
Since 2015, the gallery has been directed by Elke Helbig, daughter of the founder. Two years later, Zwart Huis relocated to the iconic Rivoli Building in Brussels, where it today represents and collaborates with a diverse mix of established and emerging Belgian artists across disciplines including Robin Vermeersch, Stefan Peters, Jan De Vliegher, Yves Beaumont, Colin Waeghe, Fik van Gestel and Stief DeSmet.
