#Fragments of Life , 2023
Ink and embroidery on cotton, steel, wood Unique artwork Niki Neuts' #Fragments of Life offers a poignant exploration of family life through a series of twelve hand-painted and embroidered towels. Each towel is hung from a metal bar using butcher's hooks, depicting a distinct scene. Together, they form a fragmented and emotionally rich narrative of family dynamics. These depictions go beyond the simple everyday, revealing symbolic and sometimes surreal visions where the everyday intertwines with the fantastical. The butcher hooks used to hang towels evoke feelings of violence and pain, suggesting that the cruelest interactions can take place within the family itself, where the intrusion of brutality is least expected. The arrangement of the installation invites viewers to move around the towels, revealing only fragments of the embroidered images, many remaining hidden in the folds of the fabric. This configuration creates a unique experience for each observer, reflecting the way we perceive and interpret family stories in a partial and subjective way. #Fragments of Life stimulates an introspection on the complexity of family relationships and on our way of forming and being formed by these incomplete stories, marked by omissions and unspoken secrets.70 x 120 x 20 cm
