How did they build that? , 2021
Mirror-polished stainless steel Edition of 3 + 2 AP The work "How did they build that?" is a multifaceted work of art that simultaneously evokes admiration for its form and makes you think about its content. Using five mirror-polished steel pipes of varying heights with rounded ends, the artist creates a silhouette reminiscent of one of Moscow's iconic Stalinist high-rises. This combination of elements not only recreates the image of a famous piece of architecture, but also symbolizes the power and grandeur that it represents. However, behind the external beauty and perfection of form lies a deep metaphor, reflecting the dark aspects of Soviet power. The mirror polishing of the pipes not only gives the sculpture visual charm, but also metaphorically reflects the duality of the Russian system, where external brilliance hides dictatorship, lack of rights, torture and humiliation. This contrast between external appeal and internal content poses the main question of the work: "How did they build that?" – the question of what methods and costs were used to achieve external success and greatness. The rounded shape of the end of the pipes, reminiscent of police batons, enhances the symbolism of the sculpture, indicating the repressive nature of state power and its willingness to use violence to maintain control and order. This element makes the image even more multifaceted, adding to the discussion of the police state theme. Overall, the sculpture "How did they build that?" is a powerful artistic statement that forces viewers to consider the cost of external splendor and what dark aspects may lie behind the façade of power and progress. It offers insightful insight into the history and nature of power, leaving room for reflection and dialogue.182 x 19 x 4 cm
