Galerie Lelong was founded in 1945 by Aimé Maeght and, from its inception, showcased major figures of modernism such as Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Antoni Tàpies, Francis Bacon, and Eduardo Chillida.

Upon Aimé Maeght’s death in 1981, the gallery adopted its current structure with three equal shareholders and directors: Jacques Dupin, Daniel Lelong, and Jean Frémon. Starting in 1981, a new era began, marked by the arrival of major artists such as Pierre Alechinsky, Louise Bourgeois, Konrad Klapheck, and Jannis Kounellis, among others.

The New York gallery was established in 1985 and has been directed since 1990 by Mary Sabbatino, who played a key role in bringing essential figures of Latin American art into critical discourse: Alfredo Jaar, Ana Mendieta, Cildo Meireles, and Zilia Sánchez.

Today, the gallery continues its commitment to artists at the forefront of the international art scene, representing creators from all continents and generations, including: Etel Adnan, Leonardo Drew, Barry Flanagan, Günther Förg, Sarah Grilo, David Hockney, Hyunsun Jeon, Nalini Malani, David Nash, Jaume Plensa, Alison Saar, Christine Safa, Sean Scully, Kiki Smith, Nancy Spero, Barthélémy Toguo, and Marion Verboom.

The gallery has also developed the production of monumental public sculptures with artists such as Jaume Plensa, Ursula von Rydingsvard, and Jean Dubuffet (in close collaboration with the Dubuffet Foundation).

On the ground floor of the Paris gallery, a space is dedicated to original prints. A second space was opened on Avenue Matignon in 2018 and expanded in 2024.

The gallery participates in major international contemporary art fairs: Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Basel Paris, Frieze Seoul, Frieze New York, Frieze London, ARCO, Art Brussels, Art Antwerp, and TEFAF Maastricht.
